started work on restoring the bwo to an operational amateur radio station. for several weeks, the bwo had been a no-go area while contractors treated the bulkheads and other exposed areas to safeguard against the asbestos which had been there since hms belfast was in service. air samples have been taken and it is now a certified safe working area. before the contractors started work, all amateur radio equipment which could be damaged by the spray treatment was removed and stored in another area of the ship. the b40s, b41s, b28s, etc. radios and other museum equipment were covered in plastic sheeting to protect them whilst the work took place. subsequently, the london group working party have replaced the amateur rigs, psus, atus and pcs in the bwo, restored the internet connection and stripped out yards of redundant co-ax cable which fed the antennas. rather than re-use co-ax of an unknown age and condition, it is intended to replace all the old feeders with new co-ax. 5th september 2010 2nd september 2010, removal of the old masts begins. mast replacement - much of the upper deck of the ship is currently out-of-bounds to the public and is a hard-hat-area to the working staff whilst the dismantling of the masts takes place. on the port side of hms belfast is a large floating crane whose jib towers over the top of the masts. both masts are encased in scaffolding and on 2nd september, the top fifteen feet or so of the mainmast was removed and the crane lowered it to rest on the port side deck, just aft of the fo'cstle. it is assumed that this will be connected to the new mast. one of hms belfast's new masts. the new masts arrived at tilbury from svs shipyard in st. petersberg on 31st august and are due to be installed in late september. outboard of the floating crane is a large, shallow draught barge ready to be filled with scrap. the london group committee had suggested to hms belfast management that metal from the old masts could be recycled into mementos and sold to the public, but we have been informed that part of the contract with the donors of the new masts (the government of russia) is that the scrap metal will be shipped to russia. 26th
